I gave this to my 6-year-old niece, as she embarked on a long road trip to her dad's for the holidays. In this story, a man meets a gogreous woman in a chess club of which he is a member. The woman, who stole the thunder out of most men in the club, seems a poor chess player to the man. He then offers to drop her home. But when he reaches hs own house, he pleads her to have a cup of coffee with him over a game of chess. Before starting, he poses a bet to her -- if he loses the match, then the woman is allowed to go home, if she loses, then she has to take off the front most of her clothes. The woman loses three matches and is stripped down to a panty and a bra. The man is utterly excited. The next game could make her take off even that. But alas, in the fourth game, the woman exhibits exceptional chess-playing ability (like playing gambits he had never even seen) and beats. She dresses up and leaves. I just want to make sure everyone understands that this low rating is for the audio book version only. The printed books are great, however I can not recommend this audio book.
Compared to audio books like Junie B Jones, I wasn't impressed with the reader of this book and so wasn't my 7-year old. She asked me to please download Junie back on her Ipod because she couldn't understand this book. When I went to listen to it to see what she was talking about I got the point in exactly 2 minutes of listening. The reader is very hard to understand as she speeds through the story way too fast. Also I feel as if she is just reading the story without making it interesting to listen to. The reader of the Junie books is funny, makes funny sounds and changes her voice according to what is being read and what the story requires at that particular moment. It is read in an engaging way and my daughter can't get enough of listening to it. The reader of this particular book is very boring and hard to listen to (and speaks so fast it's even hard to understand it most of the time). This is a 4-CD combo. CD1 is "Kilimanjaro", CD2 and CD3 comprise "Old Man", all narrated by Charlton Heston. It is unabridged, so it means you have every word of the book on tape(CD).

CD4 is a bit of an oddity and a collector's item, with the high-pitched voice of none other than Hemingway himself reading miscellaneous material (of varying quality)and I suspect lets us listen to Papa at varying degrees of sobriety.

This combo serves as a fine introduction to Hemingway's world or as a treasure to be savored by the old faithful. Heston's voice is awesome, obviously, and I find hid performance in "Old Man and the Sea" absolutely touching and spell-binding. She has listened to it so much that I thought I should get her a few others in the series. Usually, she just listens to the CD, but we also read the book alone, from time to time. I have also observed her following along with the book a few times. She looks at the pictures and turns the page when she thinks it's time.

I was excited about this audiobook because its preview reminded me of "Forever Autumn" -- something spooky and mysterious. Sadly, it was a major let down when I finally listened to it. There were some good spots. I mean, it's the Doctor - and his character has that wit that is often hilarious. Yet, even with that, the story lacked any real substance.

I would even go so far as to say it is mostly boring. I'd get one of the other audiobooks. The Nemonite Invasion (through Audible) was awesome -- as was The Forever Trap and Pest Control. Prisoner of the Daleks is a good one too! Or, you could wait for "Day of the Troll" which will be read by David Tennant.

So, all in all, I feel it isn't worth it.

If I was just rating this book for myself, I would give it 5 stars. But as a reviewer making recommendations, I have to say that this personal account of Shackelton's important and historic expedition - destined for Antarctica- may not be a great read for everyone.As a lover of the sea, sea adventures and voyages combined with historical journeys of exploration, I became addicted to this book. However about one third of the way through, I realized that had it not been for my knowledge of nautical terms I would not have known what he was talking about half the time. The reading would have lost me early on. It may seem also at times a bit monotonous to those seeking a great adventure story. Ernest Shackelton was a great explorer and mariner, the story is one fraught with peril and survival,but his personal account of the voyage is a bit matter of fact,even dry.

On the eve of WWI, Shackleton and his crew took on this ill-fated journey with high hopes and high moral. Prepared for the worst was not enough though. They met with the most horrific of conditions, losing their ship,much of their essential supplies, their much needed team of dogs, and much more. They spent months on months literally living on the ice. Making it to Elephant Island, a handful of men including Shackleton formed a party to search for help and once again were to fight the elements for months on end. The account also includes the story of the Aurora and her crew that also fought the climate trying to bring supplies to the Shackleton crew.

The read, by Geoffrey Howard(about 9 1/2 hours) helped quite a bit in putting some emotion into this memoir and had me wanting to find out what happened next. So my recommendation on this book would definitely be for the audio edition. And at that I would say, it is for those who love anything to do with the sea voyage. For History lovers I would suggest checking out some of the other books written about "The Endurance" and these very brave men.
