In my small space I opted for Monitors all the way around including the Polk Audio Monitor Series CS1 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black), Polk Audio PSW10 10-Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) and two sets of Polk Audio Monitor 40 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black). These speakers have very good sound quality even when the sub is turned off. As surrounds, they offer clear notes, both high and mid-range, sometimes I forget they are there and turn around to look for something behind me, or the neighbors playing music, but it's just the speakers. Put them on attractive stands up front, and they offer a pretty good budget alternative to the Polk Audio Monitor 70 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker (Single, Black). They aren't the same mind you, but they are a good value when used in a smaller space or multi-use room, placed in built-ins or on a bookshelf, in an apartment/townhouse, or if you just want good sound out of a small package.
