I originally picked up this board book from a local retailer to read to my then 1 year old son. We both fell so much in love with this book, that I immediately came on to Amazon to purchase the rest of the "You Are Important" Series. He is now almost 3, and this particular book in the series is still one of his favorite books. These were my first polk speakers. I use them as sides along with a csi3 center, fxi3 backs, and a velodyne sub. They're okay, but in a medium-sized room, they definitely need the help of a sub (and I'm not the type who needs wall-shaking sound). All things are good about this drive BUT speed of writing. I am not sure how important it is for somebody. I believe reliability and throughput are 2 most important parameters for external drive.
It shows 13mb/s or 104 mbits/sec.
This device produces less than 25% !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
of frequently advertised throughput on box of 480mbits/sec as usb 2.0 ability.
My other 2 compact drives which are not using external power supply but usb port fire 20mb/sec.
Still too slow but at least better than this one.
Other then that - case, printing materials, workmanship are excellent.
I believe somebody on technical side in WD did very poor job.

These covers are very nice. Made of a heavy resin (sorta like fiberglass but heavier), and they look just like a set of real books. When you get closer you realize the front is perforated so that the speaker sound can come through. And as the other reviewers stated, these are designed specifically to fit the AR Home Decor satellite speakers. The cut out is an oval shape so it is difficult to fit ordinary rectangular speakers into them. I did buy the matching speakers, and they look and sound great. My husband and I were very pleased with this set. We purchased this to get some basics before our trip to Costa Rica. You really need to listen to each CD many times. Using in your car is perfect. I hated the original Willy Wonka movie. Gene Wilder was too smarmy, Charlie too bland and the Oompa-Loompas way too creepy. Hence, I saw no reason to read the book that inspired my loathing. But when I learned that Roald Dahl, author of the book, had actually dissociated himself from the Wonka adaptation, I though that maybe, just maybe, I might like the book.

And I loved it!!

The book outdoes the movie in every way. Charlie and his extended family are dirt poor and hence always hungry. A yearly birthday candy bar is all they can afford. The other children, winners of Wonka's Golden Tickets, are hopelessly sniveling, selfish, spoiled and self-absorbed. When they visit Wonka's chocolate factory, they are dispatched by their own greed and lack of discipline. The scenes where Veruca Salt is disposed of by a gang of shell-shucking squirrels is perfect. Dahl's Wonka is hyperkinetic, elfin and passionate about candy. He seems not to know or care where the disappearing children have gone. The Oompa Loompas are not the lumpish candy-men of the movie but a race of tiny people transplanted willingly to the factory. The only slightly disturbing part of the book was the way the nasty kiddos were got rid of, since they could have been drowned, incinerated, or blown up like balloons. But even this discomfort is addressed by book's end.

The best part of the book was Dahl's inventive cleverness about dream up new and wonderful candies. Edible pillows, cavity-filling caramels and sweets that let you spit in many colors were just a few of his delectable concoctions. As were the long songs sung by the Oompa Loompas to celebrate the removal of bad kids. Schindelman's illustrations gave just enough of a hint at the action without taking the reader's imagination entirely off the hook. Dahl's moral sense is an important subtext throughout the book. Greed and boorishness are punished; virtue, good manners and self-restraint are rewarded. Compare that with the ethical confusion of the Wilder film.

I purchased the NAS MyBook WEII a few weeks with the intention of using for mostly backups and I have to say I'm not really satisfied with its performance for this purpose. Having said that, once I found out about its media server capabilities, I started liking it.

The not-so-great stuff: Backups
If you intend to use the product for large backups via ethernet, you'd better have a Gigabit router. Otherwise the backup of entire partitions of your hard drives will take forever. The device does not offer Gigabit support out of the box and you have to update the firmware to get it. No problem, though, the firmware update was smooth and it worked fine. I configured Norton Ghost to back up single-file backups to the MBWEII. After backing up about 450 GB, I found out the files copied to the device were somehow corrupt. Also the device froze a few times and the only way to make it work is by unplugging the power cable. Definitely not cool. I read somewhere this could be related to the server not being able to handle extremely large files. I will need to configure Norton Ghost to split backups and see how that works.

The good thing is that you can connect an external USB hard drive to the device so I backed up my partitions to one I already had then copied the data to the MBWEII by using the Copy Manager. It worked fine, it took a lot less time (since the files were copied via USB) but I would have preferred backing up my data directly to the MBWEII.

The good stuff: Media server, FTP, Download functionality
I enabled the media server on the MBWEII and it works great with the PS3. I have watched hours and hours of videos with no lag whatsoever. It's just great.

I also enabled the built-in FTP server and it works fine. However I have a 10/100 Mbit router and wired PCs but the transfer rate of large files was never above 7 MB/s. Most of the time it was around 5.5 MB/s which is a bit disappointing. But I'm glad the functionality is there and I intend to use it to access my files anywhere.

Another plus: you can configure the MBWEII to automatically download files via HTTP/FTP or torrents. Torrent users will love this functionality. Upload your torrents to the device and let it download your files to the share of your choice while your computer is off.

All in all, I think this is a pretty good product. If you want it just for backups, I do not recommend it at all because getting a large amount of data to the device is too much of a hassle (it shouldn't have to be). An external hard drive with Firewire connection is more suitable. But its solid media-serving capabilities are just too good to ignore and I strongly recommend it for couch potatoes like myself. My poor desk! I have 3 external hard drives (4 now) not to mention speakers and head phones and other usb gadgets all about. In any case, I must say that this new My Book Elite is my new favorite of the hard drives at least. Much like others like it, it is a separate memory bank from your computer or laptop so that should your pc fry, you can still have your files safely tucked away.

As some of you know, your external hard drive can also fry, so it's good to have a backup of the backup (hence I have 4 laying about) but they're still very handy. Unlike others, however, the My Book does a few other nifty things its competition can't. For example, it comes with software that easily backs up your computer files without your having to hunt for you and even categorizes them by type (Pictures, music, movies, etc). It also allows password protection which makes my privacy needs happy, and has a view screen that lets you know how much memory is remaining and a title if you wish. For example, if you had 6 of these guys you could name one "Home Videos - 2001" or something so you don't have to put masking tape on it or something as a label. It also comes with a 3 year warranty which is much more than my other hard drives.



Overall - External Hard Drives are kind of tricky. They all run the risk of breaking and they all typically do the same thing. I was more impressed with the My Book than others because of its extra goodies and extended warranty, but it also came in a cheaper container - plastic, instead of some which are rock-hard metal. It's a little more expensive, too, but it also runs absolutely silent whereas some of the others are about as annoying as a snoring spouse. Personally, as long as you don't expect the guy to undergo some kind of mega damage that might crack it's plastic coat, I think it's worth the few extra bucks to have the software and extra warranty.

PS: If you are simply wondering whether or not you need an external hard drive - YOU DO. With laptops that burn out all the time, you need a safer spot to store your precious memories and files. I recommend this one more than any other, but if you don't like the look or whatever, still buy an external hard drive. They make your computer run so much faster and makes everything so much cleaner and nicer. Just received this drive in the mail and opened it up only to find that it feels VERY cheap and flimsy. When you pick it up you can feel the HDD moving around a bit inside the enclosure. I was first intrigued by this cassette kit when I read that itwas created to boost babies' linguistic intelligence. I knew thatthere were over 10 different lullabies on that cassette but I never imagined how beautifully they were recorded. Apparently, a dozen professional vocalists were used to record each lullaby in his/her native tongue.
