You wouldn't want to jump off with these CD's if you are just starting to discover the Power of NOW. There are concepts Eckart discusses which are presumed to be known. This is a live seminar he is giving over multiple days. I particularly got a lot out of his long discussion and flushing out of "acceptance". He uses humor quite a bit. I have three other of this oral discussions or book readings and I didn't get any direct repetitions in these CD's. You cant go wrong with some enlightenment from Tolle. This is the second book in a series. I read the first one (I'm 45..but an elementary teacher) and really enjoyed the premise of the story of the children of mythological gods who were born in the present. It gave some history (which I love) and yet had the fantasy and adventure I know kids like. I passed the first one on to my 12 year old, who immediately wanted the next 3 (another came out later). She ripped right through them. She liked series so much she asked for them for Christmas so she could have all 5 books. She is now rereading them! My kids and I loved the first audio books and we might have been able to get used to the new guy if it wasn't for the way he shrieks whenever he has to do the voice of Thea! It is jarring and totally turns my kids off to the point where they just lose interest in the story and either leave the room or ask me to turn it off. He doesn't do that bad a job on the voice of Geronimo but the other characters aren't nearly as good as the original and I've already mentioned our opinion on his version of Thea.

If MOTOR CITY BLUE sounds like an old movie, there's a good reason. Author Loren D. Estleman explains in an afterward that as a kid he was a fan of film noir. When he set out to make a living as an author, he wanted to imitate the writers whose books were made into movies: Dashiel Hammet, Raymond Chandler, Micey Spillane et. al. He picked the 1975 Chandler vehicle FAREWELL, MY LOVELY as an inspiration for MOTOR CITY BLUE.

Estleman's hero, Amos Walker, could pass for Phillip Marlowe or Travis McGee. He's a big lug who wears a snap-brim fedora, smokes too much, keeps a bottle of whiskey in his office drawer, and drives a Cutlass with a Cadillac engine. Like McGee, he gets beats beat up a lot; at one point two thugs pistol whip him. He also has a police connection on the force, detective John Alderdyce, the only true black man he's ever known.

The plot isn't much. Walker is hired to find the ward of ancient mafioso, Ben Morningstar. Estleman tries very hard to bend the stereotypes concerning organized crime, but in the end he choses an ex-hockey player as a bodyguard for Morningstar who looks more like a thug than a conventional hood.

There are too many characters in MOTOR CITY BLUE, more characters than in a Russian novel, Estleman says in his afterward. You would think you'd be able to remember the main ones at the end of the novel. I consistently found myself paging back a few pages to try to figure out who some of these people were.

Like Elmore Leonard, Estleman chose Detroit as a setting. I recognized a lot of place names like Grosse Point and Rouge Road, but that didn't help bring Detroit to life for me; the setting might as well have been Battle Creek for all the difference it makes in the plot.

Estleman spends so much time trying to sound like Chander that it interferes with the flow of the novel. But, remarkably, he succeeds. Listen to this: "The air was as bitter as a stiffed hooker and smelled of auto exhaust." And this, "Together they led him to the car like a whipped spaniel."

MOTOR CITY BLUE was published in 1980. For once I thought I'd try an author at the beginning of his career. Estleman has a new one out entitled, NICOTINE KISS, that I plan to read. I look forward to comparing the two. Get more detail about Motor City Blue (The Amos Walker Series #1).

Audio books are excellent reading options or gifts for persons with little time to read or who's sight is challenged or who spend significant time commuting. This audio version is very well read and is of excellent recorded quality. BEWARE that there are some horrifically cruddy readings / very poor audio versions of this book being sold on Ebay and other online places, but this particular audio version from Amazon is excellent in every way. I listen to this tape frequently and something always stands out as very pertinent, almost as if new, every time I listen.

I have read many of Louise Hay's books and certainly she has been at the forefront of educating people on how to use The Secret and intentional thinking to cultivate positive attracting of success in all phases of one's life.

I must admit that although I was familiar with visual subliminal messages I was skepital of auditory subliminal being able to affect and produce changes in our behavior. Ms. Hay indicates in this CD that the first part of the CD is her voice speaking the positive affirmations and then the second part of the CD will be these same affirmations that will be unaudible under the wonderfully relaxing music and sounds of nature, e.g., birds, ocean, etc. She suggests that the listener use the CD at least once a day for thirty days.

Don't try to hear the affirmations...I did, but was unable to hear any voices underlying the beautiful music. However, I am pleased that I have found that many of the issues that I have had in areas of self-esteem and/or setting personal boundaries are changing in positive action. This positive behavior is showing itself in many of the challenges that I face with less fear and anxiety. I never need more than "Sandi Patty" on an item before it is in my possession, but this re-release went a bit further. My mother died exactly two years ago yesterday, 5/31/00. About three days prior to this passing mother's day I dreamed of my mother for only the second time since she has been gone. Although mother's day brings a bit of emptiness, she left behind three sisters who I take advantage of still be here with me. I rushed out to get each one of them Sandi Patty's Artist of My Soul which has a very special meaning to me. It served as one of the most intimate times I ever shared with my mother before she died. So with this mother's day, I decided to share this story which happened to me and mom before she died and accompany it with "Artist of My Soul".

To my suprise, I passed the book shelve and the book listing Sandi Patty as an author caught my eye. I picked it up and then remembered of the most unusual dream about mom singing around a throne singing "isn't He beautiful", and now this re-released song "I've Just Seen Jesus" with a book. Then it seemed to click. Mother's Day, mom "seeing Jesus", etc..... I picked up three copies for my aunts and bought two for my collection.

I listen to the CD which is enclosed in the book's rear plastic holder. Despite knowing the song and listening to it many times, it seemed to be different this time. My aunts all called crying after reading the note I wrote about my dream, the experience I had with mom in ICU while Artist of My Soul played, and how this all seemed to be a little "too perfect" for coincidence.

My rating is five stars for this item. And as for my Sandi Patty, well she will always have a special meaning and serve as a constant reminder of how much God loves me. She will always get 10 stars out of five.
