I purchased this recording on cassette at a flea market and have been absolutely delighted with it - oh, yeah, my 7-year-old likes it, too! Roald Dahl's voice fleshes out the stories and characters, as well as his typical dry observations, in a refreshing departure that satisfies kids and adults alike (we've been testing it). Remember the songs the Oompa-Loompas sang in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" or the poems in "James and the Giant Peach?" I found them to be a bit disruptive when I read those books as a child; didn't "get" them. Hearing Mr. Dahl read them really allowed me to enjoy them as well.
One word to the content: I'd forgotten that Roald Dahl does write (and read) about some tough stuff, "warts and all," as it were. Sponge and Speicker are hateful and abusive to James. The three farmers in "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" are portrayed in disgusting detail. James loses his parents scarily and suddenly when they are killed in New York (richly enough, they are eaten by a rhinocerous, which are neither native to New York nor carniverous). It's a tough world in his books. Yet it's a wondrous, fanciful one. I want my son to hang on to the perfect illusion of the latter and learn about the former aspect of the world as late as possible. He's already got hip to the tough world bit, though; so we'll aim to integrate life's knocks and laughs as best we can.
The first words I hear when I start the car engine are "Kid's tape!" sometimes alternating with, "Kid's tape, please?" or "Would you please put on a kid's tape when you get the chance?" (Guess who suggested that last version?) Suffice to say, I hear a lot of "kid's tapes," so I prefer ones I can enjoy as well. This is one of those. I can't say enough about the Magic Tree House series. They combine adventure with learning. In each story Jack and Annie take a trip in the magic tree house to different places and even different times. They meet famous historical people or experience historical events. Sometimes they travel to the future or interact with wildlife. Annie's strength is her intuition and courage. Jack's strength is his love of books and research. The two kids' strengths combine to support and guide the team.

My one complaint when we bought the first 8 stories on CD was that the stories overlap the discs which make it difficult for my son to independently select the story he wants. So I often have to navigate and find the beginning of the story then we have to switch to another disc to finish it. This is still a small hassle. However it didn't prevent me from purchasing the next set in the series. I enjoy listening to the stories too. On first listening they are interesting. With additional listening I realized how much information is conveyed.

From the beginning of the MTH stories, four stories are grouped together toward special goals. In this set, episode 8 -12, the kids are earning their Master Librarian cards by completing 4 dangerous adventures. The second four the new librarians are sent back in time to collect 4 lost myths. When they succeed they are rewarded with enlightenment that the stories are about constellations.

The stories are read by the author. She has a voice that is easy to listen to. We have some in book form as well for bed time reading. But the CD's are so perfect for riding in the car. We live in a rural area so he is stuck in his car seat for half hour rides quite often. Blair Brown's reading of "Back When We Were Grownups" is a most enjoyable one. She seems to find in each character, just the right inflections, accents, and character traits to bring them alive. From the 100 year old "Poppy" to the youngest child, Brown finds the subtleties that make each one different, and she does it without going over the top. She brings the quiet humor of the story right to the listener, and gives you the feeling you're with an old friend.

Rebecca Davitch is a 53 year old woman, who finds herself, in life, at a place she never expected. She simply thinks she is the wrong person. What happened to her life? One minute she was an aspiring history major in college, and the next she was a middle aged woman, who, widowed early in her marriage, has raised, on her own, 4 daughters, 3 of them from her husband's previous marriage. Taking over the Davitch family business of hosting parties in their large, but always in need of repair home, also became part of her exsistence. She has been and seems will always be, the glue that holds this growing family together. Always there to smooth out the wrinkles and motivate the troops.

But what of Rebecca's wants and needs? Who will ever see to them? Is her college boyfriend, who she left for her husband, the answer to her quest for the real Rebecca, or is her life just as it should be?

Anne Tyler's "Back When We Were Grownups" is a wonderful take on midlife and family life. Rebecca's thoughts and feelings seem so real, almost anyone who's been there can identify with this woman. You may have even thought some of the same thoughts as Rebecca. The family and friends who surround her could be any family, anywhere, including all the everday challenges that life presents. The story is humorous, touching and at times poignant. It reminded me a bit of Doris Day's song, "Que Sera, Sera" It is a tale of finding peace with who you are, and it is one that although starts out a little slow, will have you falling in love with the characters and wishing there was more by the end.

After buying it, I used my FreeAgent for Mac drive trouble-free for almost a year as a backup for my PowerBook G4 using TimeMachine. One day in November 2009 the drive briefly make weird clicking sounds coming from within, then continued operating normally. The strange noise was an important warning sign that I ignored, because several days later, when I needed the backup when important data on the PowerBook became corrupted, the FreeAgent drive suddenly failed to even mount on the PowerBook.

Happy ending: Days later, luckily the drive did finally mount just once more and let me back up the backup to another drive, before finally quitting for good; Seagate did replace it under warranty.

Lesson I learned: When a Seagate drive starts to make unusual noises, back up the data and replace the drive. In my case, I lucked out.
