I've seen quite a bit of commentary that criticizes what they perceive as Stout's anti-Communist agenda in the book. All I can say to that is "read it again". While not a fan of Communists, Wolfe and Archie are not friends to people spouting off about the red menace either. Mickey Spillane he isn't, thank goodness. Consider this a measured glance at the politics of the era by a writer who was trying to show the issues from a position of (relative) neutrality. Note his nod to the middle way with the treatment of the Paul Emerson character.

I have the book and I have this item, too. I'll admit I didn't get a chance to read the book, but I have listened to this cd for awhile, now. It's great for me to listen to it, while I'm doing computer work and such. I'll admit that I didn't 'get it' until listening to it for a couple of times. Also, it helps that one understands M.B.'s accent. It adds a certain something, I think. Anyway, I'm glad that it's on this audio format. Because it's easier to listen to this and do other things. I'm a bookworm, but it would be a tad difficult if I tried to read and do ther tasks at the same time, etc. All in all, I'm very glad that I purchased this item and I highly recommend it. Long before we took a stab at this series last summer, I'd heard about Bunnicula. Unfortunately, I'd foolishly discounted the books about a bunny that looked like Dracula as unappealing. Finally, desperate for in-the-car summer entertainment for elementary-school-aged bookworms, I picked up The Bunnicula Collection, a Book on CD version containing the first three titles in the series and gave them a try. They turned out to be a smashing success.

The first book, Bunnicula A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery goes something like this: Chester the cat and Howard the dog are shocked to learn what their family, the Monroes, takes home one night from the theater: a bunny that looks suspiciously like a vampire. Although the human family members quickly acclimate to the presence of the new pet, Chester and Howard, after noticing carrots, lettuce and tomatoes gone white, feel something fishy is going on and set out to solve the mystery. Howliday Inn, the second story, takes place at the kennel where the three pets are left for boarding during a family holiday. The third, The Celery Stalks at Midnight concerns strange behavior on the part of the Monroe boys and the silly antics of an additional character.

Bunnicula, recommended for age seven and up, is a humorous, captivating series about the interactions between three well-thought-out, sometimes suspicious, furry characters and their humans. At the end of the CD, author James Howe explains its origins, and gives credit his coauthor and wife, Deborah, who died before her time of cancer. The only disappointing thing about Bunnicula is the difficulty of obtaining successive books in the series read by Victor Garber, as other authors that have performed the stories aren't nearly as good. Having just finished reading The Celery Stalks at Midnight, the experience wasn't nearly as enjoyable as listening to Victor Garber's five-star reading performance. Note that two additional sets are available [...] books 4 & 5 and books 6 & 7. Only the price ($38 per set) has prevented me from picking them up. I picked up the audio version. I enjoy Dean Koontz's books. This one however was...difficult to rate. I would like to give it a 3.5 He is a talented writer, exceptional storyteller, but this story got caught up in too many metaphors, similes and poetics. I hit fast forward a couple of times because I couldn't handle the speakers miserable drawn out recounting of "everything" he encountered. His inflection was the same throughout the entire story. It isn't really a complex story line, just wordy. I couldn't get myself connected with his character, Joe. I love quirky storylines and plots, but couldn't get interested in this one. I can understand why others rated it higher though. I think Koontz has a way of connecting to people. Maybe not to the same folks all the time. I have friends that I would recommend this book to (not the audio version). I have other friends that I know wouldn't be able to get into the story. To each his own. But now there are ten of them, and the earlier books can be difficult to find in libraries and bookstores, so it might be a while before I find out how book three's chief villain is finally brought to justice. our kids aged 5 and 9 are doing very well with this book and CD.
The older one can read and is getting familiar with the reading part, but both of them love to sing out the songs. The songs and conversations full of humor are what makes this CD tick - the CD can even be played in car just like any other music CD.

The CD is very high quality and real fun - (not boring like most language courses that assume that you are going on a vacation and need to say passport, customs, hotel etc. English is good enough for that anywhere in the world :)

This book/CD is good for the adults in the family also. I am finally able to sound out the French rrr sound!

I had not read Vince Flynn before, but based on this book he is now one I will continue reading. In Transfer of Power he creates a well crafted thriller.

Through some things that are a concern to many, donations, terrorists are able to gain access and control The White House which causes the President to be sheltered and the Vice President to assume control. The siege continues and the the threats escalate as demands are made.

And during the process Flynn works in many charactors and personalities that are credible and interesting - in other words he does not rely solely on a great concept to create the story. He can write and writes well.

Buying The Janson Directive

I read the Bourne Identity awhile ago and enjoyed it, this book cemented my fandom for Robert Ludlum. While I only gave this novel 3 out of 5 stars, there are reasons.

This is a taut thriller that grabbed and held on to my interest for the first 400 or so pages, then it began to wane. At this point I did a little research, this novel was not finished by Ludlum, he passed away in 2001 and this was the first of his books to be "Ghost Finished", I'll chalk up the somewhat uninspired ending to the ghost writer.

More about the book. It is very "running man" The protagonist, Janson, is a sort of super spook, think Jason Bourne without all the memory loss, who is given a mission to save a billionaire philanthropist devoted to world peace. Janson assembles a crack team who go in to a impossible mission and succeed, only to have it all unravel at the end. Then Janson is blamed for the mistake and he traipses all over the world hunting down clues until he finds the ultimate answer, a conspiracy that would take down the entire free world. It is very well written and the characters are enjoyable, my favorite is the Russian money launderer, too bad Ludlum cannot give these characters any more adventures.

This book is well written and gives you motivation to learn. But:
- the author speaks too fast - not that it's hard to understand, but we learn better if we start slowly (same for music). My mother tongue is french, and I speak all the time way too fast. To my french friends: this is not going to help.
- the book starts with intonation (also a great problem for french people) and to my point of view, it should be more systematic, starting with vowels in detail. Anyway, the part with the table and vowels was missing on the CD, I had to return it twice.
I ended up by buying "Mastering the American Accent" (Lisa Mojsin). I made a great progress already after 1 week. I can see why the Spainards hate this book. I have never been to Spain and besides Medieval history and Franco of course I don't know much about the nation beyond the norm. However, the idea of Spain turning into genocidal Balkans is just silly to me. Yes it happened in the 1930's but many things happened in the 1930's a time of insanity and hate.

Also the pyschobabble was just plain annoying to me. "She was there when Martha was killed, the guilt is going to put her into shock and paralize her!" Right and that is why whole armies stop fighting when they lose comrades. Stupid and not even close to human reality and just plain annoying to read.

Just finished reading _Simple Genius_ (2007) by David Baldacci, whose work I usually really enjoy, and I was so disappointed!
The first 4 chapters, instead of any exciting action or plot set-up, have you slogging through the vaguely undefined and improbable mental problems of one of the protagonists (a former Secret Service agent, who for some unknown reason is not sleeping with her gorgeous male partner/close friend--but this is never linked to her mental/emotional issues in any way...).
When the action finally starts, it revolves around, get this--a hidden treasure from colonial days, a German POW who escaped from a US camp during WWII, and the modern-day drug-running of top-level CIA agents gone bad, plus an autistic piano-playing math whiz--all on a little cape on the Virginia coast!
The end brings even more improbable plot twists, including (I kid you not) one of the bad CIA agents trying to kill the other protagonist by thrashing him with her prosthetic leg!!!

Laurette quickly becomes attached to her majestic surroundings and the sweet elderly woman Ruth, who she watches over and lives with. Laurette is also attracted to Ryan Nichols, a native of the area and a worker at SAM. Ryan is dealing with struggles of bitterness and has questioned his faith of late due to the death of his father and the subsequent falling to pieces of his mother. Getting on with her life, Ryan's mother has left for Chicago to begin her life anew. Ryan has been left feeling abandoned and lonely.

Everyone works together at SAM to make sure the cruise ships' occupants receive all they need when they dock in Sitka. Laurette is a natural at making the passengers in distress feel comfortable, regardless of the problem, and her compassion carries over to Ryan. The two become fast friends while working together, sharing meals, and going fishing on Ryan's boat. Laurette decides she wants to remain in Alaska after her summer job ends, but what will she do to support herself, and where will she live? Ryan also has thoughts about what will happen at summer's end, for he does not want to lose Laurette. He must figure out how he can keep Laurette and properly take care of her needs. Ryan too loves Alaska, but his job is only temporary, and there are not that many jobs in the area. He must have more to offer Laurette if he asks her to remain in Alaska. In the past, Ryan has played the piano to make ends meet in the winter months. God cannot let him down.

"Alaskan Summer" is a very uplifting and Godly story, and those who enjoy Christian romance will not be disappointed. Its message of trusting Jesus and letting Him guide our actions when in doubt, is worthy. Ultimately, Ryan recommits himself to Jesus and learns to trust Him for guidance. "Love is behind all you do," prays Laurette. The two, with God's help, find a way when good friend Tyler receives a promotion and will be moving with his family away from the Sitka area. Laurette is offered a teaching job while Ryan is in line to step into Tyler's now vacant position.

This selection of "Alaskan Summer" is an audio book on four disks which makes it very appealing to take in the car, while exercising, or when you need to hear an encouraging story. I highly recommend "Alaskan Summer" to all ages of readers. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I aquired the audiobook version from audible and listened to it in my car with my seven year old son. I really didn't expect for him to like it and though he never seemed to pay attention to it - however he always knew what was going on and was quite upset that the ending didn't play out the way he wanted. Apparently my little 7 year old boy who revels in dirt and climbing trees is a closet romantic and expected a wedding - no matter that the characters were a bit too young to get married.

The short summary - We follow the March family, 4 dutiful daughters and their mother through the period of time that their father is away at war (I believe he's a chaplain). They befriend their neighbors and go through several trials, all learning to be better people through it all.

It doesn't sound very exciting does it? Well it's not exciting in the shootem up explosion type way - but it is very engaging and endearing. Many people argue that this book has lost it's luster since the girls spend time sewing, studying and functioning in rather "old fashioned" ways. Some have even complained of the overtly religious overtones. I personally though it was a wonderful story of four young girls learning each in their own way - that life can be hard, life can be heartbreaking, death is very real, but then so is love, friendship and joy. Some argue that Mrs. March is an unattainable visiage of a "perfect mother" however I argue that we see her only through her daughters' eyes - and that every mother is on a pedestal in the eyes of their daughters. We don't know if the moments when she is out of site, she is sobbing at her loneliness or having bouts of internal rage at the behavior of her children. She simply projects and outward calm, which most mothers attempt to keep in front of their children.

There is a certain beauty to this story, each of the girls has their own personal battle to fight within themselves and we watch as they find ways to overcome, either their envy, their vanity, their selfishness - some turn to friendship, others to prayer. I have to admit that I too had hoped for the ending that my little son wanted - even though I knew it was silly to wish for two young people to end up together, but who knows what the future holds for them after the last page of the book.

The simple fact that a little seven year old ADHD boy was able to love and care about the people in this story, and to have hopes for them - shows the power of the writing contained within. I highly recommend this book - even to those who are not into "romance" or "period literature."Get more detail about Little Women.

C D Payne is a genious and the book takes place in areas close to where I grew up and where I currently reside, this makes the story come to life even further for me as the book encompases familiar trends and locations. Not every teenager wants to go back and relive their high school days, this is a story that does not dwell on the horrors of high school, but on the challenges of getting through those years socially and mentally. This book has been one of my favorites since I was 17 and I have reccommended countless individuals read it, my copy was so battered and well loved I bought a second one and then just recently so my husband could experiance it purchased the adio series which is very well done. You will laugh heartily, cringe on que, and gape open mouthed at the text in a rollercoaster of emotions and possible recollections of past experiances in common. I will share that like many other readers I devoured Deathly Hallows over a weekend; then reread it several times more in the weeks and months that followed. Yet I cannot give it the excellent rating that so many have bestowed, because of a single infuriating detail: the casualty roster includes a name that should not be there. A character of prodigious intellect and mighty skill--more than enough to foil the rather idiotic attack Rowling crafted. If MOTOR CITY BLUE sounds like an old movie, there's a good reason. Author Loren D. Estleman explains in an afterward that as a kid he was a fan of film noir. When he set out to make a living as an author, he wanted to imitate the writers whose books were made into movies: Dashiel Hammet, Raymond Chandler, Micey Spillane et. al. He picked the 1975 Chandler vehicle FAREWELL, MY LOVELY as an inspiration for MOTOR CITY BLUE.

Estleman's hero, Amos Walker, could pass for Phillip Marlowe or Travis McGee. He's a big lug who wears a snap-brim fedora, smokes too much, keeps a bottle of whiskey in his office drawer, and drives a Cutlass with a Cadillac engine. Like McGee, he gets beats beat up a lot; at one point two thugs pistol whip him. He also has a police connection on the force, detective John Alderdyce, the only true black man he's ever known.

The plot isn't much. Walker is hired to find the ward of ancient mafioso, Ben Morningstar. Estleman tries very hard to bend the stereotypes concerning organized crime, but in the end he choses an ex-hockey player as a bodyguard for Morningstar who looks more like a thug than a conventional hood.

There are too many characters in MOTOR CITY BLUE, more characters than in a Russian novel, Estleman says in his afterward. You would think you'd be able to remember the main ones at the end of the novel. I consistently found myself paging back a few pages to try to figure out who some of these people were.

Like Elmore Leonard, Estleman chose Detroit as a setting. I recognized a lot of place names like Grosse Point and Rouge Road, but that didn't help bring Detroit to life for me; the setting might as well have been Battle Creek for all the difference it makes in the plot.

Estleman spends so much time trying to sound like Chander that it interferes with the flow of the novel. But, remarkably, he succeeds. Listen to this: "The air was as bitter as a stiffed hooker and smelled of auto exhaust." And this, "Together they led him to the car like a whipped spaniel."

MOTOR CITY BLUE was published in 1980. For once I thought I'd try an author at the beginning of his career. Estleman has a new one out entitled, NICOTINE KISS, that I plan to read. I look forward to comparing the two. Get more detail about Motor City Blue (The Amos Walker Series #1).

Don't try to hear the affirmations...I did, but was unable to hear any voices underlying the beautiful music. However, I am pleased that I have found that many of the issues that I have had in areas of self-esteem and/or setting personal boundaries are changing in positive action. About three days prior to this passing mother's day I dreamed of my mother for only the second time since she has been gone. Although mother's day brings a bit of emptiness, she left behind three sisters who I take advantage of still be here with me. I rushed out to get each one of them Sandi Patty's Artist of My Soul which has a very special meaning to me. It served as one of the most intimate times I ever shared with my mother before she died. To my suprise, I passed the book shelve and the book listing Sandi Patty as an author caught my eye. I picked it up and then remembered of the most unusual dream about mom singing around a throne singing "isn't He beautiful", and now this re-released song "I've Just Seen Jesus" with a book. Then it seemed to click. Mother's Day, mom "seeing Jesus", etc..... I picked up three copies for my aunts and bought two for my collection.

I listen to the CD which is enclosed in the book's rear plastic holder. Despite knowing the song and listening to it many times, it seemed to be different this time. My aunts all called crying after reading the note I wrote about my dream, the experience I had with mom in ICU while Artist of My Soul played, and how this all seemed to be a little "too perfect" for coincidence.

My rating is five stars for this item. And as for my Sandi Patty, well she will always have a special meaning and serve as a constant reminder of how much God loves me. She will always get 10 stars out of five.

This great song released in the mid 1980's written by the Gaithers serves as a modern day hymn that blessed so many then, and sure blessed one son that misses his mom everyday. I have always loved FSF's writing. His prose is beautifully poetic. This is his best work by far. The book comes alive in this reading by Alexander Scourby. I have listened to this recording probably 10 times over the last few years and I never tire of the story or the way it is read. I have also listened to the version read by Tim Robbins and he doesn't do the book justice. He portrays Gatsby as kind of a dour fellow. I have always viewed Gatsby as the ultimate romantic and that is how he is portrayed by Scourby in this reading. I cannot recommend this audio enough.Get more detail about The Great Gatsby.

The plot here is the weakest of the entire series. The baseline "life at Hogwarts" stuff is still fun, but the rest is a bit forced. As the central book of the series, though, it can almost be taken as a metaphor for the series itself:

The 3 tasks of the Triwizard tournament are effectively a recapitulation of the first 3 books. However, in those books Dumbledore was the one pulling the strings and making sure everything worked out. Here Voldemort is doing the string-pulling, though we don't find that out until the final pages. That reveal is when the world of the series changes from a place where a happy safe ending is guaranteed to something more dangerous and real. It is also a bit of foreshadowing towards book 7 when we understand that even Dumbledore doesn't necessarily have a happy ending in mind for Harry. This is an excellent series of audio CDs! It's quite a bit cheaper to buy the full set rather than the CDs for each philosopher individually. The narration is great (Charlton Heston, what can I say?...and other actors playing various parts).

I'm a novice at philosophy, but I found the presentation interesting, engaging, and at an appropriate level for a beginner. To me, the presentation on each philosopher seems to be a very good overview with enough depth to get an idea and flavor for what the philosopher's point of view was and how this point of view fits within those of the time and of other philosophers. There is also some background on the personal life and development of the philosopher.

The movies did a fabulous job of captivating the essence of the books in the amount of time they had available.

Sophie Thompson does an amazing job narrating this story. Her depictions of Mr. Wigg and the vain lion in the zoo, for instance, made me laugh out loud. She creates a unique voice for each character, and perfectly captures the acerbic and stern tone of Mary Poppins.

After listening to this book, I went online, hoping to find that Ms. Thompson had narrated the other Mary Poppins books. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only one, at least so far.

I'd forgotten how much I love Mary Poppins. Yes, she's vain and stern and cranky, but I've always thought that she wears those traits as a disguise -- she allows the mask to slip on a regular basis, and whatever lies underneath is surprisingly complex. What is Mary Poppins? A magician? A star? An angel? Whatever she is, I'm glad P.L. Travers thought her up. I'd forgotten how multi-layered and fascinating these stories are, and I'm glad to have rediscovered them.

I have wanted to listen to this since it first came out but never could afford it until now. In listening to this I was not disappointed and as crazy as this sounds I liked it better than the movie. There is more detail to this version than you get in the movie or even in the book for that matter.

In this version we find out how Leah got the plans to the Death Star before she is ever captured. We are treated to scenes of life on Alderan and Bail Organa tells Leah why they need Obi-Wan's help. We get to see Luke Skywalker flying through Beggar's Canyon - something only hinted at in the movie. Also - we get to find out what happens after the door closes when Princess Leah is interrogated by Vader. These are just a few examples of the extras you get from listening to this.

This is an extremely well done dramatized radio broadcast version of A New Hope and if you can get past listening to another actor play to part of Han Solo or Princess Leah you should enjoy this greatly. Rowling could have written 6 adventure stories like Chamber of Secrets and people would still have loved Harry Potter. Azkhaban let people know that she had something extra in mind. Harry-Ron-Hermione-Hagrid, Harry-Lupin, Harry-Sirius, Harry-Dumbledore, James-Sirus-Lupin-Pettigrew. The book leaves behind the 'I'm a wizard!' focus of book 1 and the 'life at Hogwarts' focus of book 2, and turns to a real focus on friendship and love. These themes are continued in the later books, of course, though with an added element of death and loss. Here we get just the good stuff. Hard not to like that.

Somewhat surprisingly, the movie for book 3 actually improves the experience of reading the book. The time-travel sequence at the end is much better in the movie than in the book and, having seen the movie, the book's missteps can be overlooked.
