Lowest Price The Great Gatsby

I have always loved FSF's writing. His prose is beautifully poetic. This is his best work by far. The book comes alive in this reading by Alexander Scourby. I have listened to this recording probably 10 times over the last few years and I never tire of the story or the way it is read. I have also listened to the version read by Tim Robbins and he doesn't do the book justice. He portrays Gatsby as kind of a dour fellow. I have always viewed Gatsby as the ultimate romantic and that is how he is portrayed by Scourby in this reading. I cannot recommend this audio enough.Get more detail about The Great Gatsby.

Low Price The Prydain Chronicles Book Three: The Castle of Llyr (The Chronicles of Prydain)

This entire series is just awesome. Every single book kept me enthralled when I was a kid (I read them over and over) and I am re-reading them for the second time as an adult.

Really, I'm not good at reviewing stuff, but this book hadn't been reviewed yet. Basically, you need to read this book. And the others.Get more detail about The Prydain Chronicles Book Three: The Castle of Llyr (The Chronicles of Prydain).

Save Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4)

The plot here is the weakest of the entire series. The baseline "life at Hogwarts" stuff is still fun, but the rest is a bit forced. As the central book of the series, though, it can almost be taken as a metaphor for the series itself:

The 3 tasks of the Triwizard tournament are effectively a recapitulation of the first 3 books. However, in those books Dumbledore was the one pulling the strings and making sure everything worked out. Here Voldemort is doing the string-pulling, though we don't find that out until the final pages. That reveal is when the world of the series changes from a place where a happy safe ending is guaranteed to something more dangerous and real. It is also a bit of foreshadowing towards book 7 when we understand that even Dumbledore doesn't necessarily have a happy ending in mind for Harry. Discount Giants of Philosophy Series (The Audio Classics: Giants of Philosophy)

This is an excellent series of audio CDs! It's quite a bit cheaper to buy the full set rather than the CDs for each philosopher individually. The narration is great (Charlton Heston, what can I say?...and other actors playing various parts).

I'm a novice at philosophy, but I found the presentation interesting, engaging, and at an appropriate level for a beginner. To me, the presentation on each philosopher seems to be a very good overview with enough depth to get an idea and flavor for what the philosopher's point of view was and how this point of view fits within those of the time and of other philosophers. There is also some background on the personal life and development of the philosopher.

These seem to me to be great introductions and I enjoy listening to them enough that I have listened to them multiple times.Get more detail about Giants of Philosophy Series (The Audio Classics: Giants of Philosophy).

Cheapest The Spiderwick Chronicles: Books 1-5: Book 1: The Field Guide; Book 2: The Seeing Stone; Book 3: Lucinda's Secret; Book 4: The Ironwood Tree; Book 5: The Wrath of Mulgarath

Mark Hamil is spot-on with his reading of these Spiderwick books. While I find the stories themselves to be somewhat thin, this is a perfect road trip choice for light family fun.Get more detail about The Spiderwick Chronicles: Books 1-5: Book 1: The Field Guide; Book 2: The Seeing Stone; Book 3: Lucinda's Secret; Book 4: The Ironwood Tree; Book 5: The Wrath of Mulgarath.

Cheap Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)

They are as creative as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, they are consistent, they are captivating. I find it an extra bonus that the same reader was used for each of the books. As an avid book on tape "reader" it is disconcerting when the reader switches on a favorite character, say, Sherlock Holmes. The movies did a fabulous job of captivating the essence of the books in the amount of time they had available.

I heartily endorse the series!Get more detail about Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6).

Where To Buy Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)

Book 2 is really a replay of book 1 and works to reinforce the basic structure of the series. The plot, including the finale, is actually better designed than in book 1, but there isn't as much emotion behind it. The fact that Harry is a wizard isn't new anymore. We spend the book getting used to life inside Hogwarts alongside Harry. It is a fun journey, but not quite as exciting as the initial discovery. Mary Poppins Review

Sophie Thompson does an amazing job narrating this story. Her depictions of Mr. Wigg and the vain lion in the zoo, for instance, made me laugh out loud. She creates a unique voice for each character, and perfectly captures the acerbic and stern tone of Mary Poppins.

After listening to this book, I went online, hoping to find that Ms. Thompson had narrated the other Mary Poppins books. Unfortunately, this appears to be the only one, at least so far.

I'd forgotten how much I love Mary Poppins. Yes, she's vain and stern and cranky, but I've always thought that she wears those traits as a disguise -- she allows the mask to slip on a regular basis, and whatever lies underneath is surprisingly complex. What is Mary Poppins? A magician? A star? An angel? Whatever she is, I'm glad P.L. Travers thought her up. I'd forgotten how multi-layered and fascinating these stories are, and I'm glad to have rediscovered them.

God is in Control: A Very Special Story for Children with CD (Audio) (Dove Story) Best Quality

This is such a dear book and especially dear lesson that parents or grandparents can share with young children. I have purchased the complete set, twice, to give to our two married daughters to share with our grandchildren who I find just thirst for such affirmation in how much God loves them and provides for them throughout their lives. Each story is beautifully and dearly written. Thank you, Amazon, for making the Dove award books for children...available for people such as myself...to share with my children and grandchildren. I cannot express enough...just how much my grandchildren have already taken to these stories of God's love and the miracles He works in their lives. Cradle and All Get it now!

The only writer who should get any acclaims on this book is the one who wrote the jacket copy! It made me interested enough to read it (well, listen to the audio version anyway). There were so many plot holes and conflicting details. And it was creepy, rather then mysterious. Do not read... pick another Patterson book, ANY other! Get more detail about Cradle and All.

Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama Order Now

I have wanted to listen to this since it first came out but never could afford it until now. In listening to this I was not disappointed and as crazy as this sounds I liked it better than the movie. There is more detail to this version than you get in the movie or even in the book for that matter.

In this version we find out how Leah got the plans to the Death Star before she is ever captured. We are treated to scenes of life on Alderan and Bail Organa tells Leah why they need Obi-Wan's help. We get to see Luke Skywalker flying through Beggar's Canyon - something only hinted at in the movie. Also - we get to find out what happens after the door closes when Princess Leah is interrogated by Vader. These are just a few examples of the extras you get from listening to this.

This is an extremely well done dramatized radio broadcast version of A New Hope and if you can get past listening to another actor play to part of Han Solo or Princess Leah you should enjoy this greatly. Mark Hamil and Antony Daniels voices are featured - not to mention all of the sound effects that we know and love from the movies. Get more detail about Star Wars: The Original Radio Drama.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) Decide Now

Rowling could have written 6 adventure stories like Chamber of Secrets and people would still have loved Harry Potter. Azkhaban let people know that she had something extra in mind. Harry-Ron-Hermione-Hagrid, Harry-Lupin, Harry-Sirius, Harry-Dumbledore, James-Sirus-Lupin-Pettigrew. The book leaves behind the 'I'm a wizard!' focus of book 1 and the 'life at Hogwarts' focus of book 2, and turns to a real focus on friendship and love. These themes are continued in the later books, of course, though with an added element of death and loss. Here we get just the good stuff. Hard not to like that.

Somewhat surprisingly, the movie for book 3 actually improves the experience of reading the book. The time-travel sequence at the end is much better in the movie than in the book and, having seen the movie, the book's missteps can be overlooked. Low Price Catching Fire (The Second Book of the Hunger Games) - Audio

I loved The Hunger Games and was one of the first in my "literary circle" to read it. I knew it would be successful because it is so different from any young adult novels I've read in the past few years. I was very anxious for Catching Fire to be released. It was not a disappointment. Although the novelty of the plot was not so shocking, I enjoyed Catching Fire tremendously. I couldn't wait to be back with Peeta and Katniss once again. The downside is...the third book isn't out yet! I am prediciting there will be a movie.

Discount A People's History of the United States CD: Highlights from the 20th Century

This provides a few anecdotes of "revolutionary" history of America. In the introduction, the author proclaims he is providing a history of the individual people, instead of the common focus of the important names and dates. However, the actual focus is on people involved in left wing causes (with the focus often an key players in these rolls.) While this does provide a good background of socialist causes, it is primarily a history of liberal students and the poor that associate with their causes. (He even attempts to show a more 'broad' support for an issue by saying that in addition to the college towns, San Francisco passed a similar anti-war resolution.) The goal is obviously an attempt to paint social revolutions as being more broadly representative of the people. However, this leaves out many other things that could be interesting. The first person approach used for much of the narrative also makes it feel more like propaganda than history.

The reading of the audiobook also has something to be desired. Matt Damon's delivery is fairly well done, but very slow. Howard Zinn's comments manage to be even slower. Make sure you can play it at faster than normal speed!Get more detail about A People's History of the United States CD: Highlights from the 20th Century.

Buying Castles in the Sand (Romance Alive Audio Books)

I agree with the previous reviewer! I too listened to this audio cassette recording of Janet Dailey's Castle in the Sand and I see that Amazon is saying that it's unabridged but according to Romance Alive Audio on the back of their audiobook case it is abridged and approximately 90 minutes of playing time and that is not a whole lot of time to get to really enjoy a story. Castles in the Sand appears in a short story anthology from Zebra Romance and the Anthology is titled Spring Bouguet and the story has less then 140 pages so I really don't understand why a short story romance needed to be abridged for audio, I mean they could have easily recorded the whole story! Castles in the Sand is about a woman named Bridget O'Dwyer and a man named Reese Sullivan. Both of their fathers were Irish immigrants who started an Amusement Park in California and when Bridget's parents died she went to live with Reese and his family and eventually fell in love with Reese but was hurt when he went off and left her but 12 years later he is back when his father becomes ill and he and Bridget try to keep the old Amusement Park up and running and there is some rekindled romance between them but because it's so abridged I felt that the romance got shortchanged and there could have been more of the romance! If you are interested in this story then I recommend buying the anthology that it is in, the ISBN number for that book is 0821753096.
