Buying Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals Book/CD

I learned a lot about how the our ears interpret sound. It trains you to be able to discern different parts of the frequency spectrum and various anomalies like distortion and comb filtering. I needed to prepare for some upcoming studio time in which I will be co-mixing a new album entitled "Plastic Palm Tree Paradise". Look for it April 2010 and the first single January 2010.Get more detail about Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals Book/CD.

Shop For Conversations With God Volume 2 (An Uncommon Dialogue) (Conversations with God (Audio))

As with any books of this type, it will resonate with the people who's beliefs are along these same lines and won't with people who believe the Bible is 'the word of God.' This is something each individual will determine for themselves. Beliefs are just that and to say someone else's beliefs are not right, just because they may not be what you believe, is a judgment none of us should make for another. Likely a Christian who chooses to read (or listen to) this book, will have to keep an open mind as it does put God in a different perspective from what is taught in organized religion - a God withOUT judgement, withOUT control, with only pure, UNconditional love...not exactly the perception we learn about God in Sunday school and church. For those, who have these same beliefs, this book is a wonderful addition to have. This is definitely a book on spirituality, not religion. Conversations with God Book 1: An Uncommon Dialogue Right now

This might tickle the ear of most people, which is why a lot of people eat this up and hail this as divine. But let me ask you, you want to believe in a god that places a mass murderer like Hitler in heaven. A god that supports you and wants you to be whatever you want to be. Ok, I want to be a rapist, murderer, arsonist and this god will support me in my decision because what I want, this god wants. This god mixes Biblical truth with lies, this sounds like the devil to me. He's the god of this world, but not God, the Creator. If you want to know the real God, read the Holy Bible, not listen to this drivel. I picked this up because I thought this guy really talked to God, but after listening to this, I believe this guy either spoke to a demonic being, has quite an imagination, or dropping acid. This god, even states that most of us listening, or reading, will call a lot of this blasphemy, that's is probably the most truthful thing about this material. Beware of false prophets, and this guy is one of them. He also says that there is no devil or hell, let me tell you, the biggest weapon the devil has is to make us believe he is not real. Making us believe the devil isn't real is emphasized a lot in this material. This should only be taken as entertainment only, not to be taken as the truth. You want to know God, pray to Jesus Christ, and read His holy word. One more thing, the male/female voice of god will get on your nerves after a while. Can't this god make up his/her mind of what gender to be. Plus the quality of the sound isn't very good. It's muffled at times. Also the volume sounds loud at first, but after a while, the volume goes down low. This isn't digitally mastered as stated on the front box cover.Get more detail about Conversations with God Book 1: An Uncommon Dialogue.

Low Price True Grit

I read a lot of books (164 in 2007), and it's rare that I actually have an emotional response. Not to the story -- that has to happen or reading would be no fun at all. I mean feeling genuine affection for the characters, so that I'm actually sorry the story is over.

True Grit is the first book in a long time to elicit that response from me, and I'm not exactly sure why it did. It was certainly not the plot, which is simplicity itself: fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross hires an unconventional U.S. marshal, Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, to hunt down Tom Chaney, the man who killed her father. That's all, but it takes the whole book for that storyline to complete itself, and what a glorious ride it is.

What makes the read memorable is how Portis draws his two lead characters. The title attribute is at first meant to apply to Cogburn, of course, but we soon discover that Mattie herself has just as much "grit" (the word "sand" is also used in this way) when she asks the local sheriff for his opinion on who the best marshal is:

He said, "...I reckon William Waters is the best tracker. The meanest one is Rooster Cogburn. He is a pitiless man, double-tough, and fear don't enter into his thinking.... Now L.T. Quinn, he brings his prisoners in alive.... He will not plant evidence or abuse a prisoner. He is straight as a string. Yes, I will say that Quinn is about the best they have."

I said, "Where can I find this Rooster?"

Mattie is full of surprises, but we soon find that Rooster is, too. Introduced as a hard-drinking, unreliable man who is the epitome of the loner, Rooster begins to grudgingly admire the "sand" (a.k.a. "grit") of this "child" and a kind of respect (and later, affection) grows between them. It is this unexpected turn of character (along with other surprising touches that kept me on my toes) that display Portis's skill to such great effect.

Donna Tartt (an author in her own right) gives a fine reading on the audiobook of True Grit. Her Mississippi accent substitutes for the Arkansas twang of the characters well enough for most listeners, and her vocal characterizations are utterly perfect. Not only are they distinct and unmistakable, but they also express a deep knowledge of these people as individuals, allowing the listener to completely get lost in the story.

Tartt's afterword adds little except to express her entire family's love for the book (it is, I understand, an introduction to the print edition, and is probably better served in that capacity), but acts as a good celebration of a book that is likely to become one of my favorites, as well.

Like I stated at the beginning, very few books speak to my emotions the way that True Grit did, and I look forward to reexperiencing its wonders in the near future because this is one book that will require multiple readings to really understand its subtleties. This is not just a terrific Western; it's a terrific novel, and one that deserves a wider audience.Get more detail about True Grit.

I purchased the entire set of "season" tapes years ago. We've listened to them over and over. Purchase The Noticer-Audio: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective.

I listened through the book in a single sitting last week while I was waiting for my eyes to recover after surgery. I can imagine that if I had a paper copy, it would be one of those books that I would not have been able to put down.

The Noticer was a funny mix of what appeared to be a fiction and non-fiction story all rolled into one that followed the activities of an old guy by the name of Jones (just Jones...no mister). Jones seemed to show up at just the right time to help people who were in sticky life situations, and after he dispensed his pithy, down to earth wisdom, disappeared as mysteriously as he appeared.

I spent most of the book trying to figure out if Jones was actually a real person or a supernatural being of some sort...it annoyed me a little because it was distracting, but I guess that's part of what kept me engaged. The episodes contained within the book, while engaging on their own, felt a little disjointed and almost as though they were mini-sermons tacked together, and I often wondered how Andy switched from narrating the story from his perspective to writing about situations where he was not present. In spite of these distractions I'd whole heartedly recommend the book. It contains a swag of easily applied common wisdom for living that is refreshing in it's directness and simplicity. Jones doesn't mince words, but dispenses truth with grace and love.

Jones' gift for being able to notice little things that were in plain view, but often overlooked by others, allowed him to help his new friends see their circumstances from a different perspective. Jones often said : "In desparate times, much more than anything else, folks need perspective." And it was this theme that eventually tied the disparrate parts together for me. I finished up the book thinking that it would be nice to have a noticer around to bring perspective to my life in those moments where I can't see the forest for the trees :)

It is an inspiriting and challenging read. Well worth the investment.Get more detail about The Noticer-Audio: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective..

Junie B. Jones Audio Collection, Books 17-24

We LOVE Junie B. Jones! I was getting them from the library but now I'm buying them because the kids (twins, almost 6) just can't get enough. The best part is, I listen too, and I'm as entertained as they are. Yes, there is some bad grammar and she does tend to say "stupid" a bit too often for my taste, but Barbara Park has really captured the heart and mind of a 6 year old girl. The stories are well crafted and Junie B. always learns valuable life lessons. My kids can relate. I love this series. And Lana Quintal is wonderful as the voice of Junie B. She never talks down to her audience. Junie B. comes across as a bright, curious and lively child. Hooray for Lana Quintal. Hooray for Barbara Park.Get more detail about Junie B.
