My poor desk! I have 3 external hard drives (4 now) not to mention speakers and head phones and other usb gadgets all about. In any case, I must say that this new My Book Elite is my new favorite of the hard drives at least. Much like others like it, it is a separate memory bank from your computer or laptop so that should your pc fry, you can still have your files safely tucked away.

As some of you know, your external hard drive can also fry, so it's good to have a backup of the backup (hence I have 4 laying about) but they're still very handy. Unlike others, however, the My Book does a few other nifty things its competition can't. For example, it comes with software that easily backs up your computer files without your having to hunt for you and even categorizes them by type (Pictures, music, movies, etc). It also allows password protection which makes my privacy needs happy, and has a view screen that lets you know how much memory is remaining and a title if you wish. For example, if you had 6 of these guys you could name one "Home Videos - 2001" or something so you don't have to put masking tape on it or something as a label. It also comes with a 3 year warranty which is much more than my other hard drives.



Overall - External Hard Drives are kind of tricky. They all run the risk of breaking and they all typically do the same thing. I was more impressed with the My Book than others because of its extra goodies and extended warranty, but it also came in a cheaper container - plastic, instead of some which are rock-hard metal. It's a little more expensive, too, but it also runs absolutely silent whereas some of the others are about as annoying as a snoring spouse. Personally, as long as you don't expect the guy to undergo some kind of mega damage that might crack it's plastic coat, I think it's worth the few extra bucks to have the software and extra warranty.

PS: If you are simply wondering whether or not you need an external hard drive - YOU DO. With laptops that burn out all the time, you need a safer spot to store your precious memories and files. I recommend this one more than any other, but if you don't like the look or whatever, still buy an external hard drive. They make your computer run so much faster and makes everything so much cleaner and nicer. Transfer rates are fine, including watching 1080p movies from the disk on a TV. The eSata connection doesn't work for me, but I haven't been able to test on a different motherboard to confirm if it's me or the device. USB rates are good enough for me though, so I haven't bothered.

It's a bit expensive (hence 4 stars), but that's the price you pay for the convenience of having everything in one place instead of split across multiple, cheaper drives.

I purchased the NAS MyBook WEII a few weeks with the intention of using for mostly backups and I have to say I'm not really satisfied with its performance for this purpose. Having said that, once I found out about its media server capabilities, I started liking it.

The not-so-great stuff: Backups
If you intend to use the product for large backups via ethernet, you'd better have a Gigabit router. Otherwise the backup of entire partitions of your hard drives will take forever. The device does not offer Gigabit support out of the box and you have to update the firmware to get it. No problem, though, the firmware update was smooth and it worked fine. I configured Norton Ghost to back up single-file backups to the MBWEII. After backing up about 450 GB, I found out the files copied to the device were somehow corrupt. Also the device froze a few times and the only way to make it work is by unplugging the power cable. Definitely not cool. I read somewhere this could be related to the server not being able to handle extremely large files. I will need to configure Norton Ghost to split backups and see how that works.

The good thing is that you can connect an external USB hard drive to the device so I backed up my partitions to one I already had then copied the data to the MBWEII by using the Copy Manager. It worked fine, it took a lot less time (since the files were copied via USB) but I would have preferred backing up my data directly to the MBWEII.

The good stuff: Media server, FTP, Download functionality
I enabled the media server on the MBWEII and it works great with the PS3. I have watched hours and hours of videos with no lag whatsoever. It's just great.

I also enabled the built-in FTP server and it works fine. However I have a 10/100 Mbit router and wired PCs but the transfer rate of large files was never above 7 MB/s. Most of the time it was around 5.5 MB/s which is a bit disappointing. But I'm glad the functionality is there and I intend to use it to access my files anywhere.

Another plus: you can configure the MBWEII to automatically download files via HTTP/FTP or torrents. Torrent users will love this functionality. Upload your torrents to the device and let it download your files to the share of your choice while your computer is off.

All in all, I think this is a pretty good product. If you want it just for backups, I do not recommend it at all because getting a large amount of data to the device is too much of a hassle (it shouldn't have to be). An external hard drive with Firewire connection is more suitable. But its solid media-serving capabilities are just too good to ignore and I strongly recommend it for couch potatoes like myself. I hesistated on this purchase for probably a year before I decided to purchase the whole set. A multi-voice drammatic reading of the entire Bible is a large and complex project, so they are not free. I already had three recordings of the New Testament, fully drammatized to single voice. And I had one for the Hebrew Bible. Did I really need another? I purchased Genesis through Deuteronomy as single books as I taught through the Pentatech this autumn. It was good enough to convice me to take the plunge. Here's what I got for my money.

Overall, this is an excellent recording. The technical quality is high, recordings are clear, the direct-to-your-mp3-player file format is much more convenient than the cassette tapes and audio CDs I've had in the past (no ripping required!). The TNIV translation is fresh and clear, yet dignified and accurate. It should be: it boasts impressive scholarship behind its rendering of the biblical texts (e.g. Gordon D. Fee for the New Testament).

The one small criticism I might make is that oral interpretation is somewhat uneven. Most of it ranges from good to, well, the word "magisterial" comes to mind. Yes, some of it really is that good. Occasionally, however, a voice seems to leave a drammatic moment flat. Yet for the price--and Amazon's price couldn't be beat--these recordings are probably the deal of the decade. It certainly is one of the best drammatic renderings of the Bible I've ever heard. For many books, it IS the best drammatic reading I've ever heard.

In summary, I need not have hesitated. Buying this set was a very good decision. For those who've never LISTENED to the Bible before, be ready to have your ears opened!
