here is what I sent Amazon customer service:
I am writing about this Western Digital 1TB back up drive, and especially the Memeo autosync and autobackup software that was preloaded on it upon receipt. My computer got noticeably slower once installing this drive, and this is software that I have to buy after 30 days. I just checked the online descriptions again, even the detailed ones, and there is no mention of software at all, much less that you have to buy it after a 30 day free trial.
You cannot stop this software once it loaded on your PC, short of removing from the computer totally. My desktop will not come up at all on either mine or my wife's account after 15 days of it being installed. I finally decided to remove this software from my PC through Control Panel, and now my computer is working much better under her userid, have not checked mine yet. At least Internet Explorer will come up when launched.

Unless you can provide alternate backup software, I want to put this HDD back in its original box and return it for a refund. It has been a big waste of my time, and I am very disappointed in Amazon's deceptive listing of its software. I use this drive with Time Machine on my 15" Macbook Pro, and so far have been tickled pink with its performance. It's fast, beautiful, and even quieter than I had anticipated. The aluminum look matches the aluminum macs very well. I changed out my computer hard drive recently for a larger one and restored the new hard drive from My Book. Approximately 80G of data took just a little over two hours to transfer to my computer's new hard drive. Go Firewire!

The auto power down is really nice, too. Shut down your computer and your drive shuts down with it. Buy Western Digital My Book Studio Edition 500 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/FireWire 800/eSATA External Hard Drive WDH1Q5000N!

Rowing

This is a decent, if basic, introduction. I've just become interested in rowing and was looking for a good beginner's overview. This book served that purpose, but feels a bit lightweight nonetheless. For one thing, it's a slim book, coming in at under 100 pages with just seven succinct chapters. There are also quite a few pictures, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because the pictures are often helpful in illustrating points in the text (as they should), but bad because sometimes it seems like the book lacks substance due to the high proportion of photos. Also, sometimes the pictures feel a bit like fluff, where they take up a lot of space without adding a great deal to the value of the text. However, having said that, a lot of these pictures are just plain pretty. In summary, the book has the overall feel of a library book, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. Below are details on its contents.

The seven chapters cover the key points to give the reader a decent overview. Chapter 1, The Lore of Rowing, gives a perfunctory history of the sport, also covering the "spirit and ethos of rowing". The history basically consists of a few pictures from the early days of rowing (which are pretty cool), an acknowledgment that people have been rowing for centuries, and recommendations for a couple books for more details. It then contrasts racing versus recreational rowing, and addresses some of the most famous aspects of rowing racing, Oxford-Cambridge and the Olympics. The chapter is wrapped up with a section called 'The need to row', where some of the motivations people have to row both as individuals and as part of a team.

Chapter 2, Know your Boats, covers the basics of rowing boats, including sweep versus scull shells. This chapter wouldn't be sufficient if you were wanting to find out enough to buy a new boat, but it does cover the parts of shells, materials, and maintenance. The sections on riggers/rigging and oars are both pretty good, going into a fair amount of depth. There are also some good tables and diagrams in this chapter that summarize the different types of shells and illustrate their composition and layout.

Chapter 3, Safety and Clothing, at first seems dull, but ends up having some decent information. Specifically, it describes how to get back in the boat after falling out, and how to right it if you flip it. There are a few points regarding safety, and some guidelines for appropriately dressing for rowing, weather considered.

The next three chapters deal more specifically with actual rowing, addressing technique. Chapter 4, The Basics, starts with a discussion of the ergometer, clearly advocating that getting some mastery over the stroke before even getting into a boat is a good idea. There are several photos used in this chapter to demonstrate the various stages of the stroke, and they are pretty good. The rest of the chapter covers getting the boat from the boathouse to the water and getting in and setting the boat up.

Chapter 5, On the Water, takes the reader from the "just in the boat and set up" point at the end of Chapter 4. Issues relating to what to do with your hands, how to maintain balance in the boat, stopping, turning, reversing and steering the boat are all addressed. Then it goes into starting off rowing one stroke at a time, and then moving into multiple strokes. It concludes with information about how to dock and get out of the boat.

Chapter 6, Essential Techniques, is the longest chapter and is the heart of the book. It explains all the basics of the rowing stroke (blade placement, leg drive, arms, recovery, controlling the seat, and catch), including pictures for each. Then it includes some exercises for working on specific techniques. These are decent and standard, and should especially help the learner who has little chance for instruction from a coach (but of course could help anyone). Finally, it discusses the role of the coxswain.

Chapter 7, Training for Rowing, gives a very basic overview of training plans, including aerobic, flexibility and weight training. The focus is towards younger rowers. The basics of anatomy and physiology as they pertain to rowing are also covered. This chapter would really be insufficient for anyone trying to come up with a training plan, as it just glosses over the best activities, but it does give a good idea of what such a plan would be like.

At the end of the book, a 2-page glossary of rowing-related terms is included, along with a list of national rowing organizations for many countries. There also is an index. Buy Rowing!

Polk Audio Monitor 40 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Cherry)

I am currently using these speakers in a stereo music setup but intend to switch them to a home theater application. They deliver excellent midrange and midbass. I find the soundstage a little lacking and that there is not much "air" in the sound - probably the result of the tweeter rolling off at higher frequencies. Overall it has the characteristic Polk sound which is mellow and not fatiguing. I recommend them heartily to users who are looking for value rather than perfection. They are well built and attractive with decent quality binding posts with the ability to biamp them via a second set of posts.Buy Polk Audio Monitor 40 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Cherry)!

A Christmas Carol and Other Favorites: A Christmas Carol, the Gift of the Magi , Dick Spindler's Family Christmas

This is another classic by Jim Weiss. Some literature just needs to be heard over and over. We have been slowly collecting many of these cds. My children love them. These are especially great as another winter, indoor activity, a bedtime story after you have read to your children, for long or short car rides, airplane trips. They are also a great for a variety of age groups. Great for families and great stocking stuffers. I am a teacher and children should be listening to stories with a vocabulary level about three years above their current grade level. Children have to be taught or trained to be good listeners and these cds certainly help. The Essential Underwater Photography Manual: A Guide to Creative Techniques and Essential Equipment

I have read this book cover to cover and consider myself an intermediate level photographer, learning to apply principles to UW. I found the advice very practical and understandable when contemplating the composition of the different types of shots. Surviving Cold Weather: Simply Survival (Greg Davenport's Books for the Wilderness)

The best part about this survival guide is Davenport's descriptions of "improvised" items. Most people don't plan to be in a survival situation in freezing temperatures, and may not have the proper equipment. He teaches you how to use survival items you have purchased and may have with you (such as an avalanche beacon or a signal flare), but also what to do in a situtation in which you don't have what you need (improvising snowshoes, stick and shadow compass, etc). The section on constructing emergency shelters gave detailed instructions for many options depending on what resources are available - trees, ice, and/or deep snow. He even provides pictures as proof of his methods. The information on how to obtain food, especially berries, and how to navigate without a map or compass was also extremely helpful. The only disappointing thing for me in this book was the information on animals. Many of the descriptions seemed cut-and-pasted, with really no specific tips on how to avoid polar bear attacks versus brown bears versus pumas.

I bought this book because I live in Alaska and was hoping to learn something that would keep me from becoming one of the many people that do not survive in the wilderness out here because they are unprepared! I bring it with me when I go backpacking or camping, because you never know. I recommend reading this book if you spend time outdoors in cold weather, whether you put yourself in risky situations or not. You'll learn not only how to be prepared but how to stay alive if you are lost or find yourself without adequate transportation, food, or shelter. Polk Audio RTi6 High Performance Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)

These were my first polk speakers. I use them as sides along with a csi3 center, fxi3 backs, and a velodyne sub. They're okay, but in a medium-sized room, they definitely need the help of a sub (and I'm not the type who needs wall-shaking sound). Otherwise, they don't produce much bass and the sound is kind of hollow. These aren't bad, but maybe my expectations were too high. Rock & Wall Climbing

I've been top roping for about 12 years now or since I was 14 yrs old. I've done a little bit of sport climbing and did a trad climb once (years ago and as a second). Lately, I've been interesting in lead climbing and ice climbing as well as Big wall climbing and I picked up this book and read the whole thing in about 2-3 hours.

What I liked is that it focuses specifically on climbing. Furthermore, the heart of that focus is "how" different types of climbing are not the same and why different techniques, equipment and safety protocals are used. The pictures are very detailed and the instructional style text is written in the big brother/buddy style so it's easy to remember what is said without having to earmark keypages or highlight sections. The author also links key ideas and facts together with reference markers, so you really grasp how things like knots and anchors are related.

One thing I didn't too like is that he gives the same amount of attention to everything. There is a whole page dedicated to buying climbing shoes, but only alittle more than half a page dedicated to top rope anchor set ups and about a page of info dedicated to ropes. Where a paragraph about buying climbing shoes would have been better and a few pages each about more important things like anchors, knots and rope care would have been perfect.
Not that it is bad thing. I did assume that the author wrote this book for the beginner that will be climbing with someone more knowledgable and not buying ropes on their own or laying anchors their first time out.

The reason picked this book out of others is that it had the best organization. Whereas other books tend to lump stacks of info on one specific thing together. This book spreads everything out in an easy to read manner. It begins with a little history of the sport, then moves to the types of climbing, then introduces general ideas and saftey before moving on to specifics like knots, techniques and gear. I also picked it up because the pictures were very detailed and I expect to pass this book onto other friends that will climb with me this season and are new to climbing.

Basically it is a great quick teach book that answers most questions new climbers will ask (it will also help you know the best shoes for you the first time you buy climbing shoes). It also makes you want to try climbing, whereas other books make climbing seem too foreign and too technical. This book makes climbing seem very accessible, whereas other books mainly portray climbing as a primarily white male sport, this book has tons of pictures of minorities/non-white-males and females, and even children & families climbing.

There is also a bonus training program for beginner climbers and useful index in the back of the book.

I recommend this book!
A+++

I love it. Western Digital My Book World Edition 1 TB Network Attached Storage WDH1NC10000N (White)

The drive works and is quiet - those are the only good things I can say. If it goes into power save mode, it falls off the network. If it falls of the network, the itunes server craps out. The itunes server won't stream Apple Lossless and WD will not answer support questions about the itunes server.

If you are transferring large files, like songs, the transfer speed is not bad. Regular ffice files - forget it. 1.2gigs of Word and Excel docs took over 30 minutes to transfer. If there is an easy/fast way to sync this drive with my main drive - I have not found it.

The Mionet software for XP is crap. Takes forever to load at start-up and there's no way to stop the auto-load. If you are home (were mio-net will not work) you end up waiting an extra minute for your laptop to start while it loads software you can't use. I have not tried Mio Net web access yet - I don't have high hopes.

Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black)

Originally, I was looking towards a Polk 40 for surround rears but noticed many home theater enthusiasts (more towards the budget-conscious) were taking advantage of the great price offering of the Polk Audio Monitor 30's.

The biggest selling point was the fact I can hang them on my wall, where the 40's needs a stand. And the fact these are offered as pairs and not singles.

So, for its price, I purchased the 30's for my rear surrounds and they are beautiful speakers. Removing the grill and overall, looks great.

But it was testing the speakers for 7.1 and under Dolby TrueHD and see if I can hear the difference utilizing Blu-rays such as "Quantum of Solace" and "Transformers" and definitely enjoyed the sound coming from the rears surround.

Now, I'm so convinced that I may order another pair to replace my rear channel speakers.
